Inspired by GB’s Team Sprint victory on Friday there was a massive turn out of riders for this weeks Welwyn Track League on a fine sunny evening with the spectators enjoying a great evenings racing.
John McClelland opened the Senior A events beating Lewis Atkins by inches in the 10 lap scratch and edging out Bryan Taylor to take the fast and furious 10 lap Handicap. Bryan Taylor got his revenge taking the Devil and the 10 lap scratch event.
With over 40 rides in the Senior B group, points were hard to come by. Ian Coles won the opening 10 lap scratch while Gavin Michell was in fine form taking the 10 lap Block handicap and third place in the scratch race. CC Luton riders had a good evening with Anthony Moye winning the 10 lap Points race and a third place behind clubmate Alan Galloway in the scratch race. Home club rider Andy Brown won the second of the two 10 lap Points races with David Scott in second place.
The closing 10 mile was enlivened by Rob Minting making full use of the B groups 250m start and getting across to join the scratch group to put him a lap ahead. Unfortunately he got shelled out later on an as the race pace accelerated. The cracking pace made breakaway attempts difficult to establish but with 12 laps to go the Agisko ‘4 rider train’ took off to gain a 60m lead – Bryan Taylor got across to join them and the five riders stayed away to the close – Joel Stewart led out John McClelland but Bryan Taylor took the victory from series leader Lewis Atkins.
With a number of youth riders opting to conserve their energy for the Newport Championships the youth numbers were down, however those that did attend produced some good competitive racing – Ben Bailey dominated the A events. Ed Ballam rode well in the B series before retiring ill and Bethany Hayward increased her lead in the C series competition
