Race distance reduced to 18 miles due to three sets of roadworks

The North Road Hard Riders marked my first open event for over twenty five years.  I was fortunate to be surrounded by so many experienced Welwyn Wheelers who were only too keen to offer advice and support. In my opinion we were blessed with a shortening of the course to 18 miles as a consequence of road works. We were also incredibly lucky with the weather which provided a bright sunny day after many days of hard cold weather.

Now the trouble with the passing of time is that you don’t remember the bad things and only remember the good. I had forgotten how hard racing can be. However I was greatly cheered by the encouragement from fellow WW’s watching around the course, which was very much appreciated. The curious thing is that once I finished I could not wait for the next one.

Dave Scott had been set off in front of Emma Trott in the role of rabbit but the shortened course prevented her from catching him and Emma gained first placed lady rider.

Graeme finished in a superb time of 50:11 and was the fastest Wheeler on the day.

I now realise that even with a shortened course the race is aptly named. It is however very well marshalled and the facilities at Queenswood School surely cannot be bettered. The event was rounded off with teas and cakes in Pavilion well deserved for the hard ride.

So for those who whimped out I can only say you missed an excellent event.
