Tim Chandler was the sole Welwyn rider to ride the West Drayton MTB cross country event on Sunday 8th June at Black Park (between Slough and Uxbridge). The course was relatively flat (i.e. no hills) but contained short technical climbs, sweeping single track and a deep water crossing. The start was the usual frantic affair that saw Tim going into the first single track section in the leading group. At this point all looked well until he noticed that his handle bars had come loose. It was then a task of nursing his mountain bike to the start area (luckily the course was laid out as a figure of 8) and borrowing an allen key to tighten up the the stem clamp. After the enforced delay (which saw him at the back of the Open field) it was a question of riding steadily and picking off the back markers. As the laps were ticked off, the course changed character as wet areas dried out and more roots became exposed which meant concentration was required at all times. By the end of the 7 laps, Tim was 18 minutes behind the winner and 11th in the Open category.
