Welwyn Go-Ride Session

The Welwyn Go-Ride Session takes place on Saturdays between 9.00 to 11.15 (for dates see the Calendar on this website). During the track season (April to September) the sessions will use track bikes (available for hire). Otherwise bring your own road, cyclocross or mountain bike.

Riders should wear suitable clothes for cycling, including gloves or mitts. A hard shell helmet must be worn. Please ensure that you have adequate clothing during the winter months; several thin layers are usually most effective for keeping comfortable throughout the session. Please bring a drink - younger riders may also wish to bring a snack.

The focus is on bike handling skills and techniques, as well as fitness. Club members of all ages welcome; unattached non-club members are also welcome. For further details please contact Peter Waghorn on 01707 327011.

A small fee is charged for the session:

£2.00 per person for youth members of Welwyn Wheelers

£3.00 per person for junior & senior members of Welwyn Wheelers

£3.00 per person for youth riders who are not members of Welwyn Wheelers

£5.00 per person for junior & senior riders who are not members of Welwyn Wheelers

Bike Hire £2.00

Note: all NOVICE track riders will be directed to this session during the track season for track induction. Riders will not be able to ride in the Monday evening training sessions until the coaches are satisfied that they can ride safely and without endangering other riders.

Note2: due to safety concerns there is a 60 rider limit for this session.

Sunday Club Runs

Club Runs take place on Sundays throughout the year. Club runs are suitable for all members aged over 12 years; younger riders should consult one of the club coaches before attending club runs. Riders aged 14 years or under usually need to be accompanied by an adult, please speak to one of the club coaches.

You will need to make sure that you have a fully road worthy bike, ideally with mudguards and that you bring with you a pump, puncture repair kit and spare inner tubes, ID and money. Please make sure that you wear adequate clothing, including gloves and overshoes if appropriate. Several thin layers usually prove most effective and allow easy adjustment.

Meet in the Puma car park at Gosling Sports Park at 9.00 for departure at 9.15. The club runs will aim to return to the Gosling Sports Park between midday and 12:30. There will be no café stop.

Club run numbers will vary due to the weather and also during the racing season so there is no guarantee that at such times many (or any!) people will turn up. Any club organised events taking place on a Sunday will take precedence as members will be expected to help or participate. To anticipate any such problems check the web site news items and forum before turning up.

For further details please contact Adrian Trott on 01992 423158.

Welwyn Wheelers Club Hill Climb Championship

The hill climb takes place in October, starting at 10.00am (for the exact date see the Calendar on this website). The hill used is New Road, in Digswell village. No advance entry – please enter on the line.

Welwyn Wheelers members pay a fee of £1 for the Hill Climb; private time trials by non-members are £3.00 each. The event is open to riders aged 12 years or over; youth riders aged under 18 years on the day of the event must have a signed parental consent form in order to ride. Note that riders under 18 years who have taken part in the current year's Club 10 Series will already have provided a parental consent form.

Please note that the start and finish for this event are both in a residential area. Riders should please act with due consideration for residents. Riders arriving by car should park in the car parking area by the railway viaduct and NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES in the access road adjacent to the start.

Riders MUST obey local regulations for time trials, as at any other event. There must be NO U TURNS at any time (a U turn is defined as a 180 degree turn in the road while astride your bicycle) and hedges etc. must not be used for riders to relieve themselves. Failure to observe these regulations, which are mandatory in all time trials in London North, will result in disqualification from the event.

The Hill Climb Championship will be followed by a club run, as normal.

Randonees

Please note that it is possible that a Club Run may be replaced by participation in a local randonee. Please check this site regularly for details when this may occur.

Wednesday Training - First claim Club members & invitees only

Training sessions run from 19:00 – 20:45 every Wednesday evening. During the Spring and Summer, training will take place on the track using track bikes. Cyclocross training and road bikes on the track will replace this in the Autumn and early Winter, while it will be just road bikes on the track for the end of the Winter. See the Calendar on this web site for exact dates.

The cyclocross will take place in the floodlit area surrounding the cycle track at Gosling Sports Park. Participants can use either cyclocross or mountain bikes. The road bike training will take place on the cycle track itself.

Cost per session:

Welwyn Wheeler  Seniors £3
Non-Welwyn Wheeler  Seniors £4
Welwyn Wheeler  Youth (U16) £1
Non-Welwyn Wheeler  Youth (U16) £2

Thursday Training - open to all

An additional training session will be run during the Autumn and Winter. This will be similar to the Wednesday session (cyclocross and road bikes on the track) but will run from 19:30 – 21:00 . In the New year, the session will only offer road bikes on the track and will consist of interval type training. See the Calendar on this web site for exact dates.

Saturday Training

A road group ride and an off-road group ride takes place (depending upon numbers) at the same time as the Welwyn Go-Ride session. Meet by the club shed down at the track at 9:00.

On-road training rides around the Welwyn Hilly Course (50km) take place early in the year before the start of the racing season. Groups will be split depending upon ability. A youth group (if sufficient numbers) will ride a shorter course. These are hard training rides - don't expect people to wait if you have a puncture or blow up ! See the Calendar on this web site for exact dates.

Track Training

Track Training takes place every Monday from April to September (apart from Bank Holidays). See the Calendar on this website for dates.

Note: that track novices should attend the Saturday morning Welwyn Go-ride sessions.

Note2: due to safety concerns there is a 60 rider limit for this session.

Welwyn Wheelers Club 10 Series

The 2009 Welwyn Wheelers Club 10 Championship Series will take place between May and August. See the Calendar on this website for dates. There is a fee of £1 for Welwyn Wheeler members and £3 for non-club members per ride.
