To crown a great few weeks for club member Laura Trott, she has now been selected to ride for England in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October. She will be riding in the track team. Lauras older sister Emma, who has been riding with the GB road squad for most of the year, has also been picked to ride for England at the Games. Emma will be riding in the road team. Emma and Laura are the first sisters to be selected in an England Cycling team and follow in the footsteps of the Swinnerton sisters, Catherine and Margaret, who represented Great Britain in 1979, 1981 and 1982. Former Welwyn Wheeler, Andrew Fenn has also been selected to go to the Games, this time representing Scotland. |

On Friday August 6th Welwyn Wheeler Laura Trott (riding for Great Britain) finished 4th in the Junior World Road Time Trial recording a time of 22m 23s over the technically and physically demanding 15km course between Acquaviva Piceno and Offida, Italy. Laura’s time saw her finish 41 seconds outside of the medals, and behind winner, for the second year in a row, Ukrainian Canna Solovei (21m 30s) who was 5s quicker than another favourite, Pauline Ferrand Prevot of France. Australian Amy Cure was third.
Speaking on Facebook, Laura expressed her disappointment with 4th saying "Gutted, 4th in the world ain't that bad I suppose but not liking this feeling right now". Laura has now moved to Montichiara, Italy for the Junior World Track Championships where she will target the Individual Pursuit and Omnium Events.
Mean while, and not wishing to be out done, on August 8th, Big Sista, Emma Trott finished 6th in the UCI 1.2 ranked Park Hotel Rooding Hills (formally Holland Hills Classic). Emma was in the only break of the day, initially containing 10 riders, which formed shortly after the second ascent of the Cauberg. The break included eventual winner, and winner of this years Tour of Flanders, Grace Verbeke (Lotto), Chantal Blaak, Marijn De Vries and Lucinda Brand (Leontien), Iris Slappendel and Claudia Hausler (Cevelo), Petra Dijkman (Red Sun Racing) and Liesbeth De Vocht (Nederland Bloeit). Verbeke attacked just before the penultimate climb of the Cauberg, with Blaak giving chase, to claim the win by 51s from her pursuer. The remaining escapes, now minus De Vries and Hausler were left to fight for the final podium place, taken by Slappendel , a further 50s back. The start sheet also included current National Champions Emma Pooley (GBR) and Emma Johansson (SWE) and local favourite Kirsten Wild (NL). |

Karl Gough, one of the founder members of Welwyn Wheelers in the 1940's sadly died on Sunday 8th August. He had just reached his 80th birthday. Karl was the first Welwyn Wheelers International rider to be selected for GB and rode the tough Berlin-Warsaw-Prague stage race (known as the Peace Race) in the late 1950's as well as the Isle of Man International Road race. Karl, with his devastating finishing sprint, was a prolific winner of local road races in the 50's and 60's and together with his team mates - Gordon Ferdinand, Ron Norton and Keith Hartridge were a powerful force on the road racing scene. He quick wit enlivened Welwyn Wheelers annual dinners with his jokes and repartee and Guest speakers were always in fear of 'Goughies' good humoured barracking. He rode his bike on every available opportunity and only stopped going out on his own a few years ago due to ill health. He was a Welwyn Wheelers 'character' known, loved and respected by all and will be sadly missed by all who new him. Karls funeral will take place at 2pm Thursday 19th August at St Bonaventure Church (bottom of Parkway WGC). No flowers but donations to SCOPE can be made at the Church Afterwards at Gosling Sports Park. |
