Welwyn Wheelers had a fine set of results at the latest round of the Eastern Area cyclocross league on 9th November with two first places and a number of top four placings.

The majority of course at Mistley took place on a wooded hillside giving some needed shelter on a cold blustery day. With the dominant Hugo Robinson of Ipswich BC missing from the youth race the leading places were up for grabs and with the Welwyn trio of Alex Anderson, Tom Gallacher and Dan Snow all on the front row of the grid they were in an ideal position to take advantage.

The Welwyn riders all had a good start and after one lap the leading three were Sam Connelly (Maldon & District), Tom and Alex with Dan chasing with two other riders.  The leading three slowly pulled away from the rest of the field still led by Dan and his group. Despite several attacks from the Maldon rider and a spill by Alex the three were still together coming up to the last lap. After finally managing to get Sam Connelly to the front a brief discussion between Tom and Alex resulted in Alex attacking. A crash by the Maldon rider coming into the woods couldn't have happened at a worst time with now both Alex and Tom in front. Alex managed to hold on for the win with Tom finishing a few seconds later. Dan had managed to jettison one rider from his group but although he couldn't hold onto the other he still managed fifth place.

Four Welwyn riders took part in the combined U12/U10 race and again had a great race. On a shortened course Will Street had a great start and soon had a huge gap on a field. The rest were led by Archie Wishart and another. Unfortunately Archie was baulked by a lapped rider and his companion managed to get a gap. Although he chased he couldn't get back on terms. In the end Will romped home in 1st place, with Archie 3rd (enough for him to be 3rd overall in the league). Jo Fry had a fine 4th place in his first race since he had his plaster off his arm. Tom Street chased the rest all race and managed 8th overall but 1st in the U10's. For full results including the lapometer click here .
