A strong contingent of youth riders from the Eastern Area Cyclocross League rode the Inter-area Cyclocross on Sunday 2nd November. This was a national team competition with teams coming from areas as far away as the North East, Wales and the South West.

The 12 riders in the Eastern Area team were split into three teams, A, B & C. The A team captains started at the front of the grid with the rest of the team lined up behind. The B & C teams lined up in the same way behind the A's. So even with Tom Gallacher in the A team he was still buried three riders deep in the field of 79.

A good start was essential with such a big field but with 79 riders all trying to get to the front before the course narrowed, this was going to be difficult. Tom didn't have a great start and neither did Alex Anderson, captain of the B team, who was balked by riders intent on running down one of the marking stakes. Meanwhile Dan Snow (captain of the C team) was moving up the field like a man possessed and at one time he was racing with Alex and Josh Green (of the A team). The course didn't take long to become a mud-bath with the inevitable consequences. After a particularly muddy section Alex managed to move ahead but this inspired Dan to kick and leave his A team teammate.

With Hugo Robinson (A team captain) up with the leaders and Sam Connelly (A team) chasing, Tom plugged away as third A team member on the course. A slight altercation with another rider nearly resulted in Tom spoiling his clean sheet of staying upright but luckily (for Tom anyway!) the other rider came off worst. Of the Welwyn riders (I think) only Alex came down which if you saw the course (or the photos) is quite amazing.

At the finish Hugo managed a fine 8th place, with Sam Connelly 24th, Tom 26th, Alex 30th (and 5th B rider) and Dan a brilliant 37th (and 1st C rider home). The Eastern Area managed a creditable 6th (from 20 teams) in the competition.
